I started working in health and safety in 2005 and was supported through my NEBOSH qualifications by my employer. As I gained more and more experience out on site I realised that I loved being able to make a difference to people’s working lives.
However, I was devastated to attend the funeral of a work colleague who had died in a horrific site accident in 2009 and the memory of that always reminds me of what can happen when health and safety goes wrong.
Although I loved building relationships and working with the operatives out on site, I started to realise that the management system behind the front line is critical in reducing and managing the risks before the operatives even get to site and my interest in management systems started.
Having spoken out at a health and safety crisis meeting called by the MD in 2010, I was given the challenge of implementing OHSAS 18001 across a nationwide business in 1 year – I did it in 8 months. In the process, I realised that some of the fundamental problems in the business actually lay in the lack of a quality management system so I then turned my attention to that and spent the next two years overhauling and integrating the existing quality and environmental management systems with the new health and safety one.
I value communication and building relationships with people from all levels of a business
Along the way I realised that some of my favourite parts of the improvement process are communication and building relationships with people from all levels of a business – fundamentally I like talking, meeting new people, learning new things and making things work better. I also like filing and organising things.
My passion for management systems
I am passionate about the risk management possibilities and efficiencies that can be gained from embedding a carefully planned and designed management system which supports the needs and strategic direction of your business. I am also committed to a proportionate approach and like to remove extraneous or inefficient documentation wherever I can.
I am excited by the possibilities of the new 2015 standards and the new high level structure (Annex SL), I’m looking forward to providing specialist advice to your business on your transition journey from ISO 9001:2008 / ISO 14001:2004 to ISO 9001:2015 / ISO 14001:2015.
I am always interested in meeting new people and visiting new sites so if you would like to get in touch to discuss any future implementation, integration or improvement project, please contact me.

Outside of work, I love baking and eating cake and doing a combination of boxercise, cycling, running and swimming to burn it all off again – I’ve just started competing in local sprint triathlons with my husband which I love. I also enjoy building colour coordinated things out of Duplo and Lego with my two little boys, although they mostly enjoy building things out of three shades of Star Wars grey.
