Nailsworth Services Limited is a steelwork design, fabrication and installation company who specialise in the manufacture of handrails, access staircases and walkways and manhole access ladders for the water treatment industry.
NSL needed a ‘competent person’ (a requirement under regulation 7 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999) to advise them on health and safety, both in the fabrication workshop and on installation sites. Before agreeing to become the nominated competent person, I visited the workshop to carry out a review of the existing health and safety arrangements and documentation. This included risk assessments for the different types of metal working machines, some of which are very large and very old and have been retrofitted with light bars, emergency stops etc as they were designed and built when health and safety was less of a consideration!
The outcome of the project was a suite of consistent and updated documentation which NSL have been able to use, both to manage and reduce risks in the workshop and on site, as well as part of tender submissions to win contracts.
